Electrical Designer

Intro

What I am all about.

I'm Michael Almond. I am a young person with a passion for solving technical and non-technical challenges.

At my time studying B.Engineering Mechatronics at the University of Newcastle I learnt technical skills to solve a variety of problems. Through my degree and Final Year Project I specialised in optimisation. Studying Mechatronics Engineering I am an expert in control and embedded systems but also have valuable skills in electrical, computer and mechanical designs.

Through my profesional career I have worked as an engineering draftsperson and an electrical designer. I have held responsibilities in designing multi-million dollar infrastructure in a cost-effective way inside agreed timeframes. I was a former leader at Woolworths supermarkets where I was responsible for the direction and day to day operations of small and large teams.

Employment History

Power Solutions

I am an electrical Designer at an Electrical Engineering design firm specialising in Ausgrid, Endeavor and Essential Energy network designs. I have also completed NBN and private electrical designs.

In my role as an electrical designer I am compotent in overhead and underground design and drafting. I have been employed at Power Solutions since January, 2019.

Woolworths

I was a Duty Manager at Woolworths Aberglasslyn. I lead small and large teams to meet individual, store and state goals and targets.

In my role I maintained a perfect safety record and held knowledge of all emergency procedures. I was awarded 5 years service before resigining in 2019 to persue an Engineering role.

Self Employed

This is an on-going project. I offer technical and social services.

I offer contract engineering drafting services and smart home automation.
I offer contract master of ceremonies, trivia hosting and tutoring (High School and University levels)

Optimisation of Electrical Infrastructure

B.Engineering Embedded Honours Thesis Report

The scope is to reduce the construction costs of electrical networks. The scope is limited to greenfield underground residential developments on the Ausgrid network. This required the model to optimally choose kiosk substation locations. This is completed using Quadratic Programming (QP). The project also has to produce Minimum Spanning Trees for both LV and 11kV networks. Prim's Algorithm was used to optimise the spanning trees. The model is imported and exported in the form of CAD drawing files. The electrical infrastructure designs produced has to meet all Ausgrid network standards.

Key Findings are a construction cost reduction of 51.1% when compared to existing electrical networks. This is a multi-million dollar savings for large residential developments. The number of substations required was reduced by 46.62% when compared to existing networks. This increases efficiency and reduces environmental impacts. This project also automates the electrical infrastructure design process.

Fernleigh Track Upgrade

Level ASP3 Electrical Design

The Fernleigh Awabakal Shared Track will further extend past the Ausgrid Pelican 33kV Zone Substation. Civil works in the area required a contestible electrical design to future proof and allow for possible upgrades and redundancy to the existing zone substation. This design had tight timeframes and the design was completed in days and submitted to Ausgrid for review.
